About the Weekend
 
The Mindful Strength Weekend Immersion with Kathryn Bruni-Young will spark a deep curiosity whether you are a yoga practitioner, teacher, personal trainer or a person interested in movement. Strength training can inform and transform bodies, from tissue adaptation to biomechanics and inner confidence, a little bit of strength can go a long way. Kathryn believes that strength training can be more accessible than other forms of movement and that it has healing qualities that are especially important for yogis and older folks. This weekend is welcoming to all ages and identities.
 
SATURDAY APRIL 27
10am-1pm
Workshop One – The Science of Strength
This workshop will begin with a group practice, followed by a discussion that looks at where we have been and where we are going in the yoga community. Key concepts like progressive loading, tissue adaptation, joint centration, and “optimal” alignment will be broken down in detail and participants will be encouraged to join the conversation. This workshop will introduce the Mindful Strength method and give participants an idea of why strength is essential to movement and life.

2-5PM
Workshop Two – What do the Core and the Upper Body Have to Do With Each Other?
This workshop will begin with breathing, intra abdominal pressure, and core responsivity. There has been a lot of confusion around what core strength is and how we work with it. From there the group will venture into wrist prep, shoulder strength, push-ups, pulling, chaturanga, and all of the questions that come up when we look at upper body strength. A big discussion point will be what does your breath have to do with your shoulders? 
 
SUNDAY, APRIL 28
10AM-1PM
Workshop Three – The Lower Body From the Feet Up
 
This workshop will begin with a group practice followed by a discussion on the lower body and how we can strengthen our hips, knees, and feet. If you have been around yogis lately you will have heard a lot about the glutes and hamstrings! Leg strength, hip centration, balance, dynamic stability and the feet as sensors and much more will be discussed in this workshop

2-5PM
Workshop Four – Tying it All Together with Mobility 
 
Mobility means different things to different people. This workshop will look at active range vs. passive range, optimal range of motion, how the nervous system makes us stiff, and how the strength practice is the mobility practice. Certain yoga poses will be outlined and critiqued, and the group will eventually move off their yoga mats and around the room.

Summer Forest Movement & Yoga Retreat!

at Windhorse Farm

I am ready to offer a retreat.

A different-to-what-I-normally offer, retreat!

I want to take you outside, spending more time in the beautiful Windhorse Farm forest, inviting you to do more of your movement/stillness, there.

It occurred to me that, when staying at Windhorse, we spend most of the time indoors.

One of the things participants of our retreats have enjoyed the most has been the time we have spent outside, learning about the plants, their environment, their ‘stories’.

Also, the night walk!!

 I’ve discovered that in our sedentary (we are becoming the shape of our chairs!!) culture, we are less able to find the ranges of motion to be ABLE to; squat to get closer to the earth/moss/life, clamber over fallen logs, walk barefoot, hang from/climb trees/branches…

My ‘yoga’ has evolved into something that looks less like yoga and more like natural/functional/restorative movement.

Marina Myra, (nature educator/biologist) and I, are coming together to offer you this retreat.

FRIDAY

5:45pm — MEET THE FOREST, MEET EACH OTHER –  walk

6:30pm — 45 min YOGA

7:30pm — DINNER

8:45pm — Night-Walk (TBC)

SATURDAY

6:30 – 7:30am — SILENT, SELF GUIDED WALK/QUEST & MORNING DIP!

8am —”GET DOWN (& up again)!!” SQUATTING/FLOOR SITTING CLASS

9am —FLOOR SITTING BREAKFAST & FREE TIME

10am — FOREST GARDEN & ART 

11am — “HANG LIKE A MONKEY”(from the trees)

1pm — LUNCH & FREE TIME

2:30pm — A brief talk about your eyes/vision

3pm —  SILENT SITTING IN THE FOREST – MEDITATION/ALONE TIME

4pm — MOBILIZE YOUR FEET, CLASS

5pm — “FIRE KEEPER” GAME, FOX WALKING/OWL EYES

7pm — DINNER

8pm — FIRE-SIDE HANGOUT, ORANGE BROWNIES (cooked in the fire by YOU!)

9pm — SAUNA & DIP

6:30 – 7:30am — SILENT, SELF GUIDED WALK/QUEST & MORNING DIP!

7:30am — 1 hr YOGA (a little bit of everything) CLASS
